Leeds register interest in Sam Oguntayo

Leeds have turned their attention to non-league player Sam Oguntayo according to The Sun.

What’s the latest?

The youngster may be plying his trade in the lower leagues at Kingstonian but he is clearly highly rated and is being chased by Manchester City and Watford.

However, Crystal Palace are believed to be leading the race for the 17-year-old, and after sending scouts to watch him play for Kingstonian Oguntayo could be ready to accept an offer to train with the Eagles’ under 23s.

Leeds would therefore need to act quickly in order to lure him to West Yorkshire, but as of yet there is no concrete movement regarding a possible deal.

Planning for the future

Leeds may have enjoyed success under Marcelo Bielsa in the Championship that they haven’t seen for a number of years, but the academy is almost as much cause for excitement.

Under the Aregtine the likes of Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton have been promoted to the first-team, while there is also a lot of excitement over Pascal Struijk, Ryan Edmondson and Alfie McCalmont.

Oguntayo could potentially join that trio in the under 23 set-up, and with Bielsa keeping a close eye on his development he may have a lot to offer in the future.

That may be enough to persuade him against a move to the Premier League clubs mentioned, though of course his arrival in Yorkshire would still be a risk due to the fact he is plying his trade in non-league football.

Even if he doesn’t sign, Leeds’ pursuit of a young player should be treated as a positive as it indicates that they have several plans and methods in place to improve the squad – not just attempting to sign first-team players as they look towards the Premier League.
